💬 What is OrenChat

OrenChat is an Android app for conversations in rooms: you enter a room, hear and talk with everyone inside, turn on your camera when permitted, and write in the chat on the same screen. Public rooms for everyone, private rooms for invited guests only.

Who it's for: groups of friends who want a permanent voice chat room, communities that run meetings with taking turns to speak, anyone who misses the voice chat rooms of the old days, and anyone who needs a calling app that is truly accessible — with large text, contrast and read-aloud. Free voice conference calls, with no paid account and no ads.

A conversation that fits the room

The room owner chooses — and in a modular room can even change it during the call — whether everyone talks together, talks by pressing a button, or takes turns by raising a hand.

Accessibility from the ground up

Enlarged text and buttons, contrast, reduced motion, personal read-aloud of what's on the screen, and room backgrounds tested for readability.

Your voice stays between you

Voice and video travel directly between the participants' devices, and when there is no direct connection — encrypted through a relay server that cannot hear or see them. Calls are not stored permanently, and there is no way to listen to past calls or pass them on. Your full name stays confidential; in the room only your nickname is shown.

Built with the community

A “Suggestions and bug reports” button inside the app, short surveys, and a personal reply from Oren to every message. The pilot is free.

💡 The big advantage: an app that takes shape together with you. OrenChat keeps changing according to its users' feedback. Many changes and updates in the app have already been made following users' comments, suggestions and criticism — negative criticism is welcome too, because we learn from it. And what comes from you doesn't wait for months: updates go out fast, sometimes several times a week, unlike apps where you wait months for a change. Anyone who contributed an idea and gives their consent will be thanked here by name.

🌅 Our vision

OrenChat was born from a simple wish: a place where people talk to each other by voice — warmly, respectfully, and without waiting in line. Not another social network chasing attention, but a home for voice, for groups of friends and communities, built together with the people who use it.

🛣️ What’s coming — the directions we are working on now. Each one ships when it is ready and tested, and appears in the “What’s new” of the version it ships in; no promises about dates.

  • Walkie-talkie — the next step: dedicated push-to-talk (PTT) buttons, and a car mode with a giant talk button.
  • Better sound: a separate volume for each speaker, and a weak-network mode — a voice message that wasn’t sent goes out by itself when reception returns.
  • Languages without barriers: translation, transcription and a Hebrew summary of messages in other languages — only for people who explicitly agreed to it.
  • Safety in an emergency: “I’m OK” — a community check-in in one tap, and a distress call to the members of the room.
  • Joining together: a whole group moves over with one link.
  • Room recordings: coming soon, after a legal review.
  • And later: a premium subscription, a desktop version, Google Play and more languages.

New in versions 1.41–1.42: the lecture hall for live lectures to a large audience, Zoom-style rooms and lectures that keep the middle of the screen for the content, a birthday celebration in the room, replies from the founder in a pop-up window with the request’s status, fingerprint sign-in for Google sign-ins too, Ukrainian — the 23rd language, and notifications and system messages in your language — the details are in “The current version”.

Already in the app since versions 1.35–1.40: the “Games” tab with events and a top-players board, Host quiz, Trivia duel, “20 Questions” and “Who am I?”, room chat from all your visits, entry and exit announcements, the “connected to a room” bar on every screen, a community invitation link, “Bring a friend”, the Videos page, the app, the site and the guide in every language, the charter in every language, notifications in your language and read-aloud in every script, a walkie-talkie where several people talk at once, “Who’s on air” and friend notifications, community announcements and gatherings, stage, events and topics, a personal touch and a premium badge for the first 35, a visible speaking queue, “Pull out mic”, quiet hours and “I'm busy”, interests, “Find friends from your contacts”, side rooms, “Invite friends” and room links, a game room and ten new games, photos in private chats too, a personal link that tells you whether your friend hears you, time-limited blocks and account deletion in your own hands — the details are in “What's in the app”.

This vision will be rewritten together with you. Have an idea? Write to us from the app — that’s how most of the changes so far were born.

🤝 Looking for 25 volunteers — to bring OrenChat to Google Play

Today OrenChat is installed from this website. Before we can consider publishing it in Google's store, the rules of Google Play for new developer accounts first require a closed test: at least 12 testers who join the test and stay in it for 14 days in a row. We're looking for 25 volunteers, so that even if someone drops out along the way, there will surely be 12 left.

What we need from you:

  • An Android phone and a Google account (Gmail).
  • Join the test through a Google Play invitation link we send you, and install the app from there.
  • Stay in the test for 14 days in a row — don't leave it and don't uninstall the app until the end. Anyone who leaves and rejoins starts their count over from the beginning.
  • Really test the app — enter rooms, talk, write and try out the options — and report to us every bug, glitch or mistake you find, as well as what's good and what's missing. The reports reach us privately and help fix and improve the app before it goes into the store.

🎁 Thank you for sticking with it: volunteers who are accepted into the test, stay in it for 14 days and send us reports and feedback will receive two years of premium membership for free — at the end of the free pilot, when we move to the business model. The gift is for taking part in the test, and does not depend on any rating or review in the store.

Want to join? Write to [email protected] with the Gmail address on your phone, and we'll send you the link to join. The decision whether to approve the app for the store is Google's, after the test ends.

✨ What's in the app

Everything written here exists in the current version. What is still in development is marked separately below.

🎙️ Rooms and voice calls

  • A room list on the home screen — voice-and-video rooms and text rooms. Every room card shows how many people are in it right now, before you enter, and the number updates in real time. You enter with a single tap, and the voice call starts right away.
  • Public, private and secret rooms — a private room is open to invited guests only; a secret room does not appear in the list at all.
  • Opening a room of your own — anyone who has been given a quota opens a room directly; others send a request with a reason. You can invite users to the room and set a participant limit.
  • The “Side rooms” strip — inside a room where side rooms were opened, a “Side rooms” strip shows each side room and how many people are in it right now. A side room that is locked to newcomers or full is marked as such. Tap a side room to move there. Side rooms do not appear in the room list — you see them only from inside the room they were opened in.
  • Side room — a side conversation inside the room — inside the room, “Open a side room”: a conversation about something that interests only some of the people present. Only people in the room see the side room and can enter it, inside it you hear only the side room, and “Back to the room” returns you. An empty side room closes by itself after two minutes.
  • “Invite friends” and a room link — once you have joined a room, the “Invite friends” icon at the top of the room (and a row in the participants list) invites several friends at once, up to 25 an hour. “Share a room link” in the ⋮ menu creates an invitation link to send in any app: whoever taps it lands straight in the room when the app is installed, and otherwise on a page of this site that explains how to install. The link expires after the time you chose, and a room manager can revoke it.
  • Age-based rooms — the room owner can set the room for ages 20+ up to 60+, in steps of five years (and not above their own age). The check is based on the date of birth given at registration; anyone below the room's age gets a message, without anyone's age being revealed. If the room owner raises the room's age, anyone younger than the new age leaves it gently, with a message.
  • Adult-content rooms — the room owner can mark a room as adult content. Such rooms are hidden by default, and anyone who wants to see them turns on “Show adult rooms” and confirms. You can turn this off at any moment. The whole app is for ages 18 and up.
  • Who's hosting — at the top of every room you see the room's name and the room owner's name. The microphone button is large and prominent in every room and every call — orange in push-to-talk, and it stays in place in open talk and while a game is on — so you can't miss it.
  • See who is who — role badges stand out in the participants bar, the chat, the profile and the friends list: founder in gold, super admin in purple with a shield, room owner in turquoise with a star, deputy in orange with a half-star, and room moderator with a shield.
  • Deputy — the room owner appoints up to two deputies, for a limited time (up to 30 days) or until revoked. While the owner is not in the room, a deputy runs it day to day: moderators, mutes, removals and bans, blocking video and the conversation mode; the room's name, privacy and closing stay with the owner. The owner — and a deputy while the owner is not in the room — can also close the room to newcomers with the “Lock for new arrivals” switch in the room settings. The moment the owner returns to the room, a deputy has only the moderator powers the owner gave them, and moderators a deputy appointed expire together with the deputy's appointment.
  • Renaming the room — the room owner asks for a new name (up to 80 characters) with a reason, which is required (the pencil icon next to the room); the founder or their community manager approves, and then the name changes. The owner is told the decision.
  • Closing a room for good — only on purpose — whoever closes a room first sees a warning: there is no way back — the room is removed from the list, nobody can enter it and it cannot be reopened. The “Close for good” button works only after ticking “I understand — close it anyway”, and “Keep the room” cancels.
  • Presence bar — see who is connected, who is speaking and who is muted; tapping a name opens the options available for that person. The microphone mark appears next to the name in the list, not on the video square — so nothing hides the person on camera. At the top of the list is whoever raised a hand, in the order the hands went up. After them come whoever is speaking, the role holders and everyone else by name. The display name shows in full, on up to two lines, and the role as a coloured badge. When a room has more than 10 participants, a search field appears.
  • Everyone chooses what to see — a thin row at the top of the room has toggles for video, people, chat and game (when there is a game). The same toggles are also in the ⋮ menu. What you close is closed for you only, and the sound goes on even with the video closed. Drag the divider to choose the space: the video can shrink to a thin strip, and the participants list can be made wider. The layout is remembered for each room on your phone.
  • Where the sound goes — every call opens on the speaker at full volume, or in headphones if they are already connected. The “Sound” button in the call bar switches to the speaker, the earpiece, Bluetooth headphones or wired headphones.
  • Call check — a button in the call bar that shows, for each participant, whether your voice and video are going out to them and whether theirs are reaching you. When something can't be heard, you see right away in which direction the problem is, and you can copy the result and send it to us.
  • Call relay — when phones on different mobile networks have no direct path to each other, the call can go through a relay server, so voice and video still get through. The relay is used only when there is no direct connection, and "Call check" shows whether it is available.
  • In every room, the first message in the chat is a small welcome card with a link to the OrenChat site — what’s new and the guide.

🙋 Three call modes, even in the middle of a meeting

  • Open talk — everyone talks and listens at the same time, without waiting for a turn.
  • Push-to-talk — hold the microphone button to talk and release it to stop. Talking for a while? Press and slide up a little, and the microphone locks open, with a lock and the word “Locked” on the button. Another tap releases it. The lock also lets go when a manager mutes you, when the call mode changes, or when the app goes to the background.
  • Taking turns — you raise your hand, and the numbered queue is shown to everyone in a strip that stays under the stage (see “A visible speaking queue”); there is a speaking stage and a listening audience. Giving someone the floor moves them to the stage.
  • An orderly switch — a change of mode is shown to all participants, resets the queue and mutes the microphones. Nobody turns on your microphone remotely; everyone turns it on themselves when they are allowed to talk.
  • Fixed or modular room — in a modular room the room owner changes the call mode, the stage and the layout at any time. A fixed room keeps the structure and type set for it (for example a lecture with taking turns, or a text-only room), and the room owner cannot change them. The structure is set by the founder or an authorized manager, for a specific room or already in the permission to open rooms.
  • The look of the room — the room owner chooses from 16 backgrounds tested for readability, with a reminder to consider participants with accessibility needs. Personal contrast always takes precedence over the room background.

📻 Walkie-talkie — several people talk at once

  • No waiting for the mic — this is the big advantage: in a push-to-talk room several people press and talk at the same time, like a real conversation, and nobody has to wait for the speaker to finish and get off the mic. The “On air now” indicator inside the room shows everyone talking at that moment — several at once too.
  • Talk buttons — in the “Walkie-talkie” settings (in the ⋮ menu on the home screen, or in a voice room’s menu; the settings are saved on this phone only): the headset button (wired or Bluetooth) opens and closes the microphone, even with the screen off (on from the start); holding volume-down opens the microphone to talk, when you turn this on and the room is open on the screen (when it is off, the volume keys work as usual); and a floating talk button over other apps (when you turn it on), which appears when you switch to another app during a call and disappears when you leave the room.
  • The floating button and privacy — Android asks you to allow OrenChat to “display over other apps”. The button only opens and closes your microphone in the room, and does not read or see anything on the screen. You can withdraw the permission at any time in the phone’s settings.
  • Using the floating button — under the button it says “To:” and who you are talking to right now: the room, or the friend on a personal link. A double tap on the button opens “Who to talk to?”: the current room and up to 5 recent personal links, and choosing one switches to it. The button stays put — a press or a small finger movement does not move it; to move it: long-press (a tick) and then drag, and to close it, drag it that way down to the X. To bring it back, tap “Floating button” in the call’s notification, or turn it on again in the “Walkie-talkie” settings.
  • “Pull out mic” — from any call, even with the floating button turned off in the settings: a tap in the call bar moves your microphone to a floating button you talk with by pressing and holding, and the app goes to the background. The details are in the “Pull out mic” section.
  • 🔋 Save battery — if battery matters to you: switch to the floating button and leave the app in the background, with the screen off or in another app. The screen is one of the biggest battery users, so this way the room keeps playing and you talk with the floating button, without keeping the room open in front of you.
  • The persistent notification — the call’s notification has a talk button (“Talk” and “Stop talking” in a push-to-talk room, “Unmute” and “Mute” in open talk) and a “Leave room” button, so you can talk and leave without opening the app. While the floating button is closed, it also has “Floating button”, which brings it back.
  • The room in the background — the room keeps playing with the screen off and while you are in other apps. If the phone drops the room, the settings take you to exempt OrenChat from battery optimisation.
  • Connected to a room — on every screen — Moved to another screen in the middle of a room call? A small bar at the bottom of the screen shows which room you are connected to and who is speaking now, and a tap takes you back to the room.
  • Radio chirps — in a push-to-talk room: a short chirp right when you press the talk button and when you release it — from every button: on the screen, on the headset, the volume key, the floating button and the notification — and also when someone else in the room starts or stops transmitting. Only you hear it, and you can turn it off with “Radio sounds” in the “Walkie-talkie” settings.
  • “What did I miss” — missed a sentence in the conversation? Tap “What did I miss” to go back up to 5 minutes to what you heard in the room — straight from your own device’s memory, with no recording or saving on any server. Everything is erased right after listening or when you leave the room.

📲 Pull out mic — a walkie-talkie from any call

  • In every call — the call bar has a “Pull out mic” button: in a public, private or secret room, in a side room and on a personal link.
  • The app goes behind, the call goes on — one tap sends the app to the background, and you keep hearing everyone in the call, in another app and with the screen off too.
  • Press and hold to talk — the floating button becomes press-and-hold: hold it to talk and release it to listen. Talking for long? A quick slide up locks the talk and you can let go; one tap releases it, and a lock releases by itself after 2 minutes. Under the button, “To:” and the name of the conversation; tapping the label takes you back to the call.
  • In open talk too — in an open-talk room only your own microphone becomes press-to-talk, and only for you; for everyone else the room stays in open talk.
  • Take it back any time — “Return mic” in the call bar, or dragging the floating button (long-press, then drag) to the X, ends it, and the microphone goes back to the call screen. Leaving the call ends it too.
  • One permission at the start — the first time, Android asks you to allow “Display over other apps”, and once you allow it the microphone goes out by itself. You do not need to turn on the floating button in the “Walkie-talkie” settings first.

🤝 Personal link — a walkie-talkie between two friends

  • A private walkie-talkie for two — a “Personal link” connects you to one friend, only when you are both friends (an approved friend request). Open “Personal link” (the antenna icon) next to the friend in “My friends” or at the top of your private chat with them, or tap their name in a room’s participant list → “Personal link”. Tap “Ask for a personal link”, and the friend approves once.
  • From then on — one tap — either of you opens the link with one tap (“Open the link”, or from “Who to talk to?” with a double tap on the floating button) and is heard by the other at once, even with their screen off.
  • You both talk at once — both of you can press and talk at the same moment, like a real conversation, and unlike Zello.
  • When the friend’s app is in the background or closed — they get a notification “X opened a link with you” and join with one tap; until they tap it, your status line says “isn't in the link yet — they were notified”.
  • You see what is happening on the other side — a line under the talk button says exactly what the state is: “X is connected and hears you”, “X isn't in the link yet — they were notified”, “Connecting”, “Retrying through a relay server” or “The sound here is muted”. “Talking — X hears you” appears only when the friend is really connected, and if the microphone permission is missing, a message with “Fix” appears.
  • The floating button is not cut off — while you talk, a small finger movement does not stop the transmission; a quick slide up locks the talk, and one tap releases it. Only a regular phone call mutes the link; WhatsApp, a voice message or another app that grabs the audio for a moment — does not.
  • One call at a time — if you are in a room and open a personal link, you are asked to confirm, because the link takes you out of the room. Under the floating button it says “To: Personal link” and the friend’s name.
  • Privacy — nobody else gets into a personal link, and it never appears in “Who’s on air”. A block, or “Revoke the personal link” in the same place you open it, closes it at once for both of you, and opening it again needs a new request and approval.

🎲 Games — in a room and in the game room

  • 20 games — for two: chess, checkers, backgammon, tic-tac-toe, connect four, Reversi, five in a row (Gomoku), Mancala, Battleship, War (cards) and the Trivia duel; for the whole room: dice, Trivia, Host quiz, Eretz Ir (categories), Hangman, 20 Questions and Who am I?; and for a table of several players: Dominoes and Yaniv. The players play, and everyone else sees the board, talks and advises — while the conversation goes on. In most games every turn has a time limit.
  • Host quiz — someone asks questions from their own knowledge, gives points with a tap next to each player’s name (a full or a partial answer), and at the end the summary — who came first, second and third — is posted in the chat.
  • Trivia duel — a quick game for two: the same question appears for both of you at the same moment, and you have 10 seconds to answer. A right answer is worth 50 to 100 points — the faster you answer, the more you get. The server measures the time, not the phone — so nobody can cheat the clock. Choose 8 or 12 questions, from all topics or one topic, and the whole game lasts at most a minute and a half. At the end the result is written in the room’s chat.
  • 20 Questions — whoever opens it types something in secret (only they see it), and everyone asks yes-or-no questions out loud; the app counts the 20 questions, and whoever guesses right gets points for the questions left — and becomes the keeper in the next round.
  • Who am I? — each player gets a character or a thing from a ready-made list (animals, professions, objects, places in Israel and historical figures), and all the other players see it; you ask out loud until you guess, and whoever solves it first gets the most points. At the end the result is written in the chat.
  • Chess, checkers and backgammon — chess with all the rules; checkers in three styles chosen by the game manager (flying kings, English, international on a 10×10 board); backgammon with dice rolled by the server. The board offers only legal moves.
  • Chess clock — whoever opens a chess game chooses: no time limit (the default — talk at ease, the game never ends on time), or a clock by FIDE rules: Blitz (3 min + 2 s), Rapid (15 + 10) or Classical (90 + 30) — a total time per player plus an increment after every move. Two clocks sit next to the board. When time runs out it is a loss, unless the opponent has no way to win, and then a draw.
  • Game room — a room of the “games” kind, opened like any room: no camera, voice in the background. The lobby shows the open tables; anyone in the room opens a new table — picks a game and invites players — or joins a table as a spectator. Voice goes by table: you hear and talk only with the people playing or watching at the same table, and the lobby is one more table. Spectators talk too, and a player can send a spectator away from the table (not from the room). When a game ends — “Another round”.
  • Game layout — when a game starts, the video, the participants list and the chat close by themselves to make room for the board, and the sound goes on. Everyone reopens whatever they want for themselves in the panels row at the top of the room. The chat opens as a layer over the lower part of the board. Anyone who does not want to watch hides the game and gets the normal layout back, and the game goes on for the others. When the game ends, whatever closed because of it opens again.
  • The board fits the screen — and doesn't jump — every board fits the size of the screen, with no scrolling, on phones and tablets, also with a large font. The “On air now” bar keeps one height even when several people talk, so the board does not change when someone speaks.
  • Leaving the game — a “Leave the game” button is always in the game panel. A player in the middle of a game is asked to confirm, because leaving mid-game is a forfeit and the opponent wins. While the game is still at the invitation stage, leaving declines the invitation. A spectator just closes the view, and can come back to watch with a tap on “Game”. You leave the game only: the room, the call and the chat stay.
  • Fair — the server checks every move and turn, rolls the dice and keeps the clock, so nobody can cheat from their phone.
  • Game manager — a room owner who has been given the permission appoints a user to run a certain type of game, without giving them any other authority. In a game room anyone in the room can start any game.

🎲 The “Games” tab — the games world in one place

  • Playing now — a third tab at the bottom of the main screen, “Games”, shows the live game rooms you may enter: how many people are in each and which tables are open — which game and how many play it. A tap enters the room. Empty game rooms wait under “Quiet rooms”.
  • Upcoming events — tournaments and game nights planned in the game rooms, with the game's tag and “Remind me”. Whoever is in the room can tap “Invite friends” on an event and send friends a link to the room.
  • Top players — each game room has a board of the last 30 days: display name, wins and games, updated once a day. Whoever doesn't want to appear chooses “Don't show me on the leaderboards”.
  • Opening a game room — with the games manager's approval. Whoever has the approval sees the “Open a game room” button in the tab.
  • Games in a regular room — the room owner decides: “Games in this room” in the room's settings turns games off in the room. A game already running can be stopped.
  • Privacy — a board shows only the display name, the number of wins and the number of games, and only from games in game rooms. You can choose not to appear on the boards, in the “Games” tab. From games in regular rooms we keep only data without the room's name, without names and without player identifiers.

📹 Video

  • Camera at a tap — turn it on and off and switch between the front and rear camera during the call.
  • Video by room permit — the room owner requests video with a number of cameras and a duration, and Oren approves. When the quota is full a message is shown, and when the time is up the video closes. Voice calls and chat are always available, even without a video permit.
  • A layout you can change — video above the chat or beside it, and you drag to set how much space it takes. On an unfolded foldable phone they are shown side by side.
  • FOUNDER ROOM (״חדר המייסד״), with the gold “PREMIUM ROOM” badge: Oren’s room, open to everyone — up to 100 participants, with free talk and no button to hold. Anyone may turn a camera on without asking for a permit, up to three cameras at the same time; when all three are taken, you wait for someone to turn theirs off. The camera never turns on by itself, and the daily video quota does not apply in this room. Only Oren and the moderators he appointed for this room manage its participants, and its settings are fixed — nobody changes or closes the room.
  • ״חדר בדיקות״ (“Test room”) — for checking your camera and microphone: a room with its own colours and logo that belongs to nobody. Two people can be in it at the same time, each for up to 3 minutes, with a countdown: press the microphone to check your sound and open the camera to test it. When the 3 minutes are up you leave the room automatically, and you can come back half an hour later. When the room is busy, it shows how many minutes to wait. There are no games and no images in the chat, and you can write in the chat only within the 3 minutes. If you are alone in the room, tap “Sound check”, talk for 20 seconds and hear yourself — the recording stays on your phone only and is deleted right away. To keep the room clean, every message in it is deleted 3 minutes after it was written.
  • In the free version: 10 minutes of video a day, up to 2 cameras per room — every user can turn on a camera for up to 10 minutes a day (the day renews at midnight, Israel time), and a room holds up to 2 cameras at the same time — 3 while a role holder (a super admin, a community manager or a moderator of the room) is presenting. In the FOUNDER ROOM, in the founder’s other premium rooms and in the test room these limits do not apply. Voice first: video is limited automatically when the load could hurt the voice quality — new cameras are held back for a while or send at a lower quality, and your phone itself pauses its camera for a moment if your voice is breaking up, and brings it back on its own. The reason: video uses much more traffic than voice, and while the app is completely free we keep the resources for what matters most, clear and stable voice in every room. This will change: when the app moves to a business model, video will be much freer. We are committed to that.

👑 FOUNDER ROOM and the premium rooms

  • FOUNDER ROOM — that is what Oren’s room is called everywhere in the app (in Hebrew ״חדר המייסד״), and next to the name there is a gold badge: “PREMIUM ROOM”.
  • Every new room the founder opens is a premium room — up to 100 participants. Anyone in the room turns a camera on and off without a permit and without the daily video quota, up to 3 cameras at once; when they are taken, a fourth waits for someone to turn theirs off. Only the founder and the moderators he appointed in it manage the room’s participants.
  • It cannot be faked — the “PREMIUM ROOM” mark is written only by the server, and no phone can add or remove it.

💬 Chat, friends and private messages

  • Chat inside every room — the newest message appears next to the input box, and you scroll up for the history. In a room, everyone sees only the messages written while they were present, from all their visits, within the room's retention period: not what was written before they arrived, and not what was written while they were not in the room. The management team also sees the last hour when entering, for proper moderation. What they have already seen is kept on their phone, and is deleted when they sign out of the account. Links to external websites in the room’s chat open only after they have been checked; OrenChat links always open.
  • Entering and leaving — every time someone enters or leaves a room, a line appears in the chat; and when a staff member responsible for the room comes in or leaves, everyone sees a banner at the top and hears a spoken announcement, with a bell when they come in.
  • A room's chat is kept for a week — chat messages in every room are kept on the server for a week and then deleted, and the room says so above the input box. A room owner who needs a longer history asks Oren for it from “Room controls” — a month, 3 months, half a year or a year, with a short reason — and Oren decides; the owner is notified of the decision. Private messages are not deleted this way.
  • Editing your own message — a text message you wrote in a room can be edited within the first hour (long-press the message → “Edit”). An edited message is marked “edited” next to the time. Private messages cannot be edited.
  • Messages that delete themselves — before sending, in a room or in private, you choose whether the message deletes itself after half an hour, two hours, a day, two days or a week (the default: no automatic deletion). You can delete your own message by hand within the first hour, and it disappears for everyone. Deleted or edited messages are kept on the server for 90 days for safety, for the management's review only, and are then deleted.
  • Photo sharing — in a room and in private — from the gallery or the camera, with full-screen viewing: in rooms where photos are allowed, and in a private chat between friends. Before sending, the app shrinks the photo and strips its location, camera and time data (EXIF) — and the server strips it again. In private you can “Block photos from…” — the person can still write and talk, only photos stop arriving — and you can report a photo.
  • Voice messages — when the input box is empty, the send button becomes a microphone: one tap starts recording, then you send or discard. In a room a voice message is up to one minute, and in a private chat up to 5 minutes (slide up to lock the recording); it is kept exactly like a written message. While you record and while you listen, your microphone in the call is closed and the room’s sound is muted for you — so the talk in the room does not get in the way — and a small icon appears next to your name so the others know you can’t hear right now. When it ends, the room’s sound comes back by itself.
  • Tagging with @ — type @ and start a name, and a list opens of the people who may see the room. Whoever is tagged gets a notification even when they are not in the room, and the tag stands out for them in the message. There is no notification to someone who blocked the writer, and no hidden tags: the name must appear in the message. Tags are limited per message and per hour, so nobody can flood others.
  • Searching the chat — the magnifying glass at the top of the room searches a word or a name in the messages. The search covers only what you may see — the messages you saw in this room on your phone — and ignores Hebrew vowel marks and final letters.
  • Slow mode — the room’s managers can set each participant to at most one message every few seconds or minutes. A line above the input box shows the pace and, after each message, how many seconds are left. The room’s managers and Oren are not limited, and everyone in the room is told when the pace changes.
  • “Busy” and muting the room’s sound — whoever has turned on “I'm busy” (the details are in the “I'm busy” section below) shows “Busy” next to their name in the room, and their microphone closes — they can open it again any time. You can also mute the room’s sound for yourself with a button in the call bar; you are then marked “Busy” in that room automatically and your microphone closes, and when you turn the sound back on the mark goes away.
  • A phone call in the middle of a room — when a regular phone call comes in, your microphone in the room closes, the room’s sound is muted, and a phone icon appears next to your name — so everyone knows you are on a call. When the call ends the room’s sound comes back, and the microphone stays closed until you open it yourself. Another app that grabs the audio for a moment — WhatsApp, a voice message or another walkie-talkie — does not mute OrenChat, and the sound comes back at once.
  • Friends — add a friend straight from the room’s participant list (tap the name → “Add as friend”) or from their profile, and “My friends” opens from the personal menu. A friend request reaches the person as a notification, from which they accept or decline; weren’t they available? The pending requests pop up the next time they open the app. A friend’s profile shows a photo, a nickname and a sentence about themselves. The bottom bar “Rooms | Friends” shows how many new private messages are waiting.
  • Finding friends — “Find friends from your contacts” on the Friends tab: the contacts permission is asked only when you tap the button; only phone numbers are read, and they are sent encrypted for a momentary comparison on the server — never stored, not on the server and not on the phone — and nobody sees anyone's number: whoever is found appears by name and photo only. In “Security & sign-in” you can choose “Don't find me by phone number”. And “Interests” — in your profile you pick at least 3 topics (up to 25), and the friends screen shows “People who share your interests”; you choose who sees your topics, and you can ask not to be suggested.
  • Who viewed my profile — In the profile screen you can see who opened your full profile card in the last 30 days, and get a notification about it (at most once a day per viewer), with the time of the view on your clock and on the viewer’s clock. When you open another user’s full profile, your view shows up for them too, and a short explanation appears before the first time.
  • Private messages — up to three introductory messages to someone who isn't a friend yet, and free messaging once the friendship is accepted. You can write freely, even without a friendship, to Oren and to role holders for whom Oren has opened an inbox; Oren can write to anyone. You can block, unblock and report, without it affecting meeting in the rooms. A new private message arrives as a notification with the sender's name only — without the content of the message.
  • Quick reactions to messages (👍 ❤️ 😂 😮 😢 🙏 🔥 👏) — a long press on a message, in a room or in private, opens a row of emoji. One reaction per person per message: tapping it again removes it, and tapping another emoji switches. A small count appears under the message for each reaction, and tapping it shows who reacted (names only). There are no notifications for reactions.

🟢 “Who’s on air” — your friends, right now

  • “Who’s on air” at the top of the home screen — a strip that shows which rooms people are talking in right now, how many are in each room and which of your friends are inside, with a “Join” button. Only rooms you may enter appear in it.
  • A notification when a friend enters a room — every time, at most once an hour per friend (recommended, and the default), or off; from all friends or only from friends you chose. Even “every time” has a brake: at most one notification about the same friend every 10 minutes, and up to 12 such notifications an hour.
  • “Call me in” — a friend who is in a room calls you to join (“Invite friends” in the room menu), and you join with one tap from the notification. You can turn off receiving calls, and the caller is never told that you did.
  • Daily summary — off until you choose it. Once a day, at a time you choose: which rooms are active and how many people are in them — in all the rooms you may enter, or only in rooms where your friends are.
  • You decide how much — it is all in the “Friends live” settings (in the ⋮ menu on the home screen: “Friends live — alerts”). Friends only (an accepted friend request), only about rooms you may enter, and your quiet hours (the “Set your quiet hours” link is right here) and a muted phone apply here too. Don’t want them to know? Turn off “Tell my friends when I enter a room” — and no friend is notified when you enter, and you don’t appear in the “Who’s on air” strip or in your friends’ daily summary either (inside the room itself you are seen as usual).

🌙 Quiet hours — each person sets their own

  • Where to set them — in the ⋮ menu on the home screen: “Quiet hours”, and also from “Friends live — alerts” (“Set your quiet hours”). Off until you turn them on.
  • From what time to what time — you choose. The default is 23:00–07:00, and a range that crosses midnight is fine. The hours follow your phone’s clock.
  • Nothing is lost — no notifications reach you during quiet hours, but messages and requests wait for you in the app.
  • No exceptions — community announcements and event reminders don’t come during quiet hours either: community announcements wait in “Community announcements”, and events in “Events and topics”.
  • “Calls from friends still come through” — if you choose it: when a friend calls you into a room or opens your personal link, you are notified even during quiet hours.
  • What always comes through — a tag of your name in a room, and urgent security alerts about your account, such as a sign-in from a new device or phone verification.

⏳ “I'm busy” — a break from notifications for the time you choose

  • Where to turn it on — “I'm busy” next to your name on the home screen, or in the ⋮ menu on the home screen, right after “Quiet hours”. The room menu and the profile open the same choice too. And during a call, the “Connected to room…” notification has a “Busy for an hour” button — no need to open the app.
  • Until when — for half an hour, for an hour, for two hours, until the morning (07:00 by your phone’s clock), until you turn it off, or until an end time you choose. When the time is up, the mark goes away by itself.
  • No notifications — during that time no notifications reach you, exactly as in quiet hours: a tag of your name in a room and urgent security alerts always come through, and calls from friends only if you chose that in quiet hours.
  • Inside a room — when the status starts, your microphone closes (you can open it again any time), and everyone in the room sees “Busy” next to your name.
  • Outside a room — only your friends see that you are busy.

📣 Community announcements and gatherings

  • A message to the community — the community manager sends a message to every member of their community. To avoid flooding: up to 3 announcements a day, at least two hours apart; a further announcement goes out only with the founder’s approval.
  • A gathering — the community manager invites all the community’s members to a room, now or at a time they choose (up to two weeks ahead), and every member gets a push that opens the room — to move things forward, on any topic, even community bonding. A gathering in a private room: the community’s members can enter it from shortly before the gathering until it ends, and then the invitation is withdrawn.
  • All in one place — “Community announcements” in the ⋮ menu on the home screen (for members of a community) keeps the announcements and the gatherings. You can turn off one community’s pushes, and in your quiet hours they don’t come at all — either way its announcements are still kept there.

🎤 Stage, events and topics

  • Stage and audience with a raised hand — in a room with a stage, whoever is in the audience listens and their microphone is closed. You raise a hand (“Raise a hand to the stage”), and the room owner brings you up to the stage and back to the audience. Whoever raises a hand joins the visible speaking queue (see “A visible speaking queue”).
  • Scheduled events — the “Upcoming events” card on the home screen shows the next event and opens the “Events and topics” screen. There a room owner schedules an event in their room (“Schedule an event”): topic, day, time and length, at least 5 minutes from now. Only events in rooms you may enter appear; tap “Remind me” and get a push about a quarter of an hour before the event and at its start — never in your quiet hours. An event in a public room can be shared: “Share on WhatsApp” sends an invitation to the event with a link to download the app. When an event is cancelled, whoever asked for a reminder is told.
  • 12 topics to follow — Radio and PTT, Music, Technology, Judaism and tradition, Sport, News and current affairs, Culture and books, Health, Business and careers, Family and parenting, Games, and Social chat. You follow them in “Events and topics” → “Topics I follow”. A room owner gives their room up to 3 topics (there, under “My rooms”), and whoever follows a topic gets a push when a public room of the topic starts — at most 3 a day, at least two hours apart, and never in quiet hours.
  • “Lectures I attended” — a list of the lectures you attended in the last 30 days, and for each lecture a written summary for the listener: the lecture title, the lecturer’s name, the date and length, your own attendance time, the agenda, questions answered in writing and poll results the lecturer revealed, along with giving feedback and downloading the recording in the first 24 hours.

🔢 A visible speaking queue

  • Everyone sees the queue — in a room with a stage or with taking turns, a strip under the stage is always shown: for everyone in the queue, a gold circle with their number and their name in bold — the first three, and “+N” for the rest. Tap the strip to open the full list, with a number and a name for everyone.
  • “You are number N in the queue” — whoever raised a hand sees their place clearly and how many are ahead of them, and their name stands out in the strip and in the list.
  • Alerts on time — “You're next!”, with a vibration and a short sound, when you reach the front of the queue, and “Your turn — the microphone is open” when you go up to speak. Each alert comes once.
  • The stage manager — “Next in queue” brings up the first in the queue with one tap (and when several people are on the stage, you choose who steps down), arrows change the order, and there are “Remove from the queue” and “Clear the queue” (with a confirmation).
  • Speaking time, only if you want it — the manager can set a time per speaker: 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes, or “No limit”. A countdown clock appears next to the speaker for everyone to see, and when the time is up — as the manager chose — the next person goes up automatically, or the speaker and the manager just get a reminder.
  • Fair and accessible — the queue order and the speaking time are kept and enforced on the server, so nobody can move themselves up or lengthen their own time. A screen reader reads out every place, for example “Number 2 in the queue: Ronit”, and the strip stays readable with large text.

🎓 The lecture hall — live lectures for a large audience

  • Stage and audience live — a dedicated room for lectures, classes and workshops — its card is on the home screen, with “Remind me” before it opens — with its own design and layout: the lecturer leads the lecture (one lecturer on stage) and speaks to a wide audience with a large main display area (full width on a phone, and most of the screen on a computer). Anyone in the audience raises a hand to join a visible queue, and on each turn the lecturer chooses whether to give them a microphone from the audience or bring them up to the stage.
  • Lectures and rooms now look like Zoom: the stage or the video fills the whole screen, the buttons sit in a thin bar at the bottom, and the chat, questions and polls are one swipe away — the middle of the screen stays free for the content, even on a small phone.
  • Slides and materials — the lecturer presents a slide deck that everyone sees together in real time, with speaker notes shown to the lecturer alone, and can share reading materials and accompanying files for the lecture with the audience; materials are submitted in advance, and are checked and approved before the lecture.
  • Video, YouTube, screen share and a website in an isolated box — playing a video or a YouTube video in full sync for all participants (play, pause and seek happen for everyone together), live sharing of the lecturer’s screen from a phone or computer, and showing a website in an isolated secure box.
  • Drawing and writing board — a live board for explanations and sketches during the lecture; the lecturer draws on it and can invite one participant from the audience to draw with them for a limited time.
  • Written questions — also anonymously — the audience sends written questions during the lecture, under their name or as “Anonymous”, and then the question is shown to the audience without the asker’s name.
  • Polls and live trivia — quick polls (multiple choice, yes or no, or a rating from 1 to 5) and trivia quizzes with a right answer and a leaderboard; the lecturer chooses when to reveal the results to the audience.
  • Audience reactions and a “Can’t hear” button — applause and quick reactions from the audience without interrupting the flow, and a “Can’t hear” button that immediately shows the lecturer if several listeners are having trouble hearing.
  • Breakout rooms, agenda, break screen and waiting music — splitting the audience into voice breakout rooms for groups (randomly or chosen by the lecturer), where the lecturer visits each room and everyone returns to the hall at the end; an agenda with a timer for each part; a break screen and a pre-start waiting screen with pleasant waiting music; sharing a link or a file with everyone at once; and an option for the lecturer to have quiet from private messages during the lecture (messages are kept and wait for them when it ends).
  • Summary and feedback after the lecture — when the lecture ends the room closes for talk, the lecture materials remain available by link for 24 hours, and the chat and questions are kept for 30 days so the lecturer can reply in writing to unanswered questions. Participants can leave feedback with a rating and a note for the lecturer, and the lecturer receives a summary of the lecture: how many attended, how long they stayed and which questions are still waiting for an answer.
  • Lectures on the events board — a planned lecture appears on the events board as an invitation card with a “Remind me” button, and a reminder arrives before it opens.

♿ Accessibility and personalization

  • A floating accessibility button on every screen — larger text, larger and highlighted buttons, increased contrast, reduced motion and display size (compact, normal, large).
  • A dark or light theme, and the text size you choose — text size in five steps, and a separate size for the chat text.
  • Personal read-aloud on demand — turn on “Select to read” and touch a text or a button to hear it, without activating the button. You can stop, change the speed, and read aloud on mouse hover when a mouse is connected. Read-aloud uses a local voice installed on the device and is not broadcast to the call; while it reads, the microphone is muted. Password fields are never read aloud.
  • 23 languages — עברית, English, Español, Português (Brasil), Русский, العربية, አማርኛ, Čeština, Deutsch, فارسی, Français, Magyar, Bahasa Indonesia, Italiano, 日本語, 한국어, Polski, Română, Svenska, Türkçe, Українська, Tiếng Việt and 繁體中文, each under its own name. Choose on the first screen (“Which language would you like?”) and switch at any moment in “Accessibility and display” → “Layout and language” → “Language”. In Arabic and Persian, as in Hebrew, the whole app reads right to left. Notifications, their buttons and system messages also arrive in the language you chose. The translations are new — found a mistake? Tell us through “Suggestions and bug reports”. Some content, such as the trivia questions, is still shown in English or Hebrew, until we finish translating it.
  • Need an adjustment that doesn't exist? I, Oren, invite you to contact me through “Suggestions and bug reports” and tell me what would help you. I will do everything I can to adapt the accessibility tools for you.

💛 A personal touch, and premium for the first 35

  • A welcome message from Oren — Oren recorded a short voice message (up to a minute). Whoever has not heard it yet — a new member, and also someone who was already here — gets, once, on entering, a “Welcome to OrenChat” card with a play button, and can listen again in the ⋮ menu on the home screen: “Oren's welcome message”.
  • “I have a request” — in the ⋮ menu on the home screen, tell Oren what you would like: a feature, help or a change, and you can attach a screenshot. Every request is read and answered, and in “My requests” you see where it stands — received, under review, in progress, being tracked, planned or resolved — and Oren’s answer. Every answer and every status change brings a notification, and when you open the app a “Reply from the founder” window pops up: you can close it, pick a ready reply or write your own, in the same conversation.
  • Personalize — text size, colours and contrast, the volume of the app’s sound effects (entry tones and short sounds, without changing the call audio, voice messages or notification ringing), and “Simple mode”, which leaves only the everyday items in the menus — nothing is removed, and you can turn it off at any time. “Personalize” is in the ⋮ menu on the home screen; the settings apply at once, are kept with your account and follow you to every phone.
  • Birthday celebration in a room — on your birthday, every time you enter a room or a lecture everyone sees a short confetti and balloons animation with a short original happy-birthday tune and the line “Today is …’s birthday”. Only the day is shown — never the year or the age. You can turn it off in your profile (“Show my birthday”), and anyone in the room can mute celebrations for that room (“Mute celebrations in this room”).
  • A premium badge for the first 35 — those who believed in us first won’t be forgotten. The place is decided by real activity on more than ten days, checked by a smart algorithm, and by the order in which people meet this. Until the pilot ends, someone who does not visit for 60 days passes the place on to the next in line, with a push reminder after 45 days; an account that is deleted or banned for good gives up its place at once. When the pilot ends the places are frozen, and the year of premium counts from that day. The “Premium” badge shows next to the name — on the profile, in a room’s participant list and in the friends list.
  • “Bring a friend” — everyone has a personal invitation code in the profile, to copy or send on WhatsApp. For every 3 friends who join with the code and become active — a month of premium, given after the pilot period. A friend counts as active after verifying a phone and 10 days out of 30 with real activity — talking in a voice room, writing in rooms or private messages; just entering a room does not count. The profile shows the friends you brought by display name — for each, whether they registered, are active or were counted toward a month — and how many months you earned.
  • Gold for lifetime premium members — lifetime premium members are marked in gold: a golden frame around the name, and the name itself in gold — in rooms, in the chat, in the friends list and on the profile.

🛡️ A pleasant and safe space

  • A moderated room — the room owner, their deputies and whoever they authorize, keep order: a mute the participant can undo themselves, a full mute, turning off a camera and removing someone from the room when needed. Room managers cannot remove or fully mute anyone who is protected, nor the founder and the super admins, and a protected role holder cannot be blocked in private messages either. A soft mute, which the muted person lifts with a single tap, is possible for them too, at most once every two minutes. So any manager in the room who may mute can mute someone who forgot an open microphone. Blocking — for a limited time or permanently: whoever blocks chooses whether the block is permanent or time-limited — 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour, two hours, 5 hours, a day, a week or until a date and time — and then it lifts by itself. Removal from a room is not a block: you can come back.
  • Private reports from the room or the chat — choose the type of report, add an explanation and, if you like, attach up to three screenshots. The report reaches Oren and the community manager; the screenshots reach Oren only. Tick "Anonymous report — to Oren only" and your report reaches Oren alone. Nothing happens automatically without a review.
  • Secure sign-in — a Google account or a username and password, email verification, and an option to sign in with a fingerprint that stays on the device only. Detection of sign-ins from a new device and slowing down of guessing attempts. A strong password for everyone: at least 10 characters, with a letter and a digit; for role holders and holders of sensitive permissions — a strict password (at least 13 characters, an uppercase and a lowercase English letter, a digit and a symbol); common passwords are rejected. Anyone whose existing password is weak gets a reminder for 30 days, and is then asked to change it at sign-in. The app's code is obfuscated so it is hard to decipher, and repeated attempts to perform management actions without permission are detected and reported.
  • Short, clear terms of service — at registration you read the terms of service and accept them. When the terms are updated, the app shows the new text at your next sign-in and asks you to read and accept it before you continue.
  • One account, one device — the account is active on one phone at any moment. When someone signs in on another phone, the previous phone is disconnected from it immediately. Suspicious technical signs, such as frequent switching between devices or several accounts from the same network, are reviewed by the app's team. For this, the sign-in details are kept — the internet address you signed in from, the internet provider, the kind of device and the time of the sign-in — as well as which rooms you were in. These details are accessible to Oren alone, every look at them is recorded, and they are never passed on to anyone else. Oren is alerted about a sign-in from another device, a change of provider or country, and several accounts from the same address.
  • Location history: for an account marked for a location check, up to 10 location readings taken at sign-in moments are kept for 30 days.
  • Deleting your account — in your hands — in “Security & sign-in” → “Delete my account”, after verifying your identity again, and also from a dedicated page on this site: Delete account. The account is blocked at once, and after 30 days it is deleted for good — the profile, personal details, phone numbers and notification tokens; until then, signing in again cancels the deletion. Whoever deleted disappears from everyone's friends lists, and the messages they wrote in rooms show as “Deleted user”. Security and enforcement logs are kept for a year after deletion, as the privacy notice explains.
  • The providers — by name — the service runs on Google (Firebase and Google Cloud, in the Israel region) for data storage, sign-in and notifications; Cloudflare — a relay for calls that cannot connect directly; and SMS4Free — the verification codes by SMS. Each provider receives only what its job needs, and the privacy notice in the app says the same.
  • Temporary membership for two weeks — anyone who fully verifies their identity (an SMS code to an Israeli phone, or a verified email for those registering from abroad) gets in right away, without waiting. During these two weeks you have a short introductory call with one of the role holders, who approves permanent membership. Until approval you take part in rooms by voice only — no camera, no chat or photos in the room — and you appear by nickname only, without a photo or description. In the first two weeks you can write private messages only to the founder and to role holders; for those registering from abroad, phone verification may be required later. The app shows how many days are left and reminds you 7 days, 3 days and one day before the end. Without approval the account goes back to waiting — it is kept, and approval restores it immediately.
  • An approved community — every registration is approved by Oren or an authorized role holder, and anyone asked to verify their phone number verifies it with an SMS code before continuing. Anyone registering from abroad gets in with a verified email, and Oren may later ask them to verify their identity (by phone or in another way). Registration is from age 18 and up. The full name is not shown to participants and is accessible only for authorized handling of the account.
  • Communities and community managers — Oren can assign users to a community and appoint a manager for it. The community manager looks after its members and the rooms they open, with the powers Oren has given them. Removing someone from the app stays with Oren alone: a community manager only recommends and gives reasons. The community manager is alerted about every new applicant who chose his community. A community manager can also create a one-time invitation code or link and give it to a person: whoever registers with the code, or through the link, joins his community automatically. You can belong to more than one community. Your registration details (full name, email, age and phone) are visible only to Oren and to your own community’s manager — not to friends or to managers of other communities — and every view of them is recorded.
  • Room entry by community: Oren can decide which rooms each community’s members may enter. A community’s own rooms are always open to its members. On top of that, he decides two things separately: whether they may enter general rooms, and whether they may enter other communities’ rooms. A general room is one opened by someone who belongs to no community, Oren’s rooms included. Oren can also set a personal setting for a specific member, and it overrides the community’s setting. A member of several communities gets the most permissive setting among them. Until Oren sets something, nothing changes. A room you may not enter appears locked in the list, and tapping it explains why. Private and secret rooms of other communities stay hidden, as before. The restriction does not apply to Oren, to a room’s owner in their own room, or to role holders within the scope they were given. Someone who belongs to no community is not restricted.
  • Keeping order over time — a daily backup of the data, an alert to managers about a room that has not been active for 14 days (without closing it automatically), chat messages in rooms are kept for a week (or longer, in a room Oren granted an extension at its owner's request), and private messages are kept unless the sender set a deletion time for them. A sign-in from a new device sends an alert to the account owner.
  • Protection from harassers — the app runs a smart safety mechanism, with the help of an external artificial-intelligence service, that helps identify situations where someone is being hurt or harassed. In such a case the relevant information, including messages and records from the room, is passed to the management or to whoever it has authorized, for a limited time, for review and handling. The analysis gives priority to replacing names with nicknames, and every review is logged. Oren can appoint a trusted reviewer for a limited time, and decide exactly what they see. The decision is always made by a person.
  • Privacy in calls — voice and video travel directly between the participants, and when there is no direct connection — through a relay server that passes them on encrypted, without being able to hear or see them. Calls are not stored permanently, and there is no way to listen to past calls or pass them on.
  • Automatic word filter: Oren sets a list of words that are not allowed in the chat of every room, and a community manager can add words for his own community’s rooms only. A message containing such a word is blocked and not sent: the writer sees why and can reword it, and nobody else sees it. The filter runs on the server, not on the phone, so it cannot be bypassed, and it also catches vowel marks, final letters, spaced-out letters and Hebrew prefixes. Editing a message goes through the filter too.
  • Error reports: when the app runs into an error, it sends the server a technical description of it — the type of error, where in the code it happened, the screen, and the app and operating-system versions — so we can fix it. Nothing you wrote or saw is sent. Reports are kept without identifying details, for 30 days, and only the development team sees them.

📝 Feedback and surveys

  • “Suggestions and bug reports” — an issue, a suggested improvement or an idea for an upgrade, from the main screen or from inside the room. The request includes the version number, and you can follow the handling and the replies in the same request.
  • Short surveys — choice, rating or free text, with a clear end date. Shown also to those already inside a room, without disconnecting the call. Taking part is optional, and before sending you see who the answers go to and whether they will appear with a name.
  • Credit to whoever suggested it — an improvement that came from a participant's recommendation is credited here on the site with the name they chose, only if they gave explicit permission in their feedback.
  • “About” — the last item in the ⋮ menu on the home screen opens this site, the OrenChat home site, in the browser (in the app’s language — the page in that same language): what’s in the app, what’s new, the guide and the latest version to download.
Still in development
  • A desktop version — in development, first for Linux (Fedora); there is no version to download yet. Details further down this page.
  • Stability on weak mobile networks — a call without a direct connection goes through a relay server, and voice gets priority over video and holds up on a weak network. We keep improving. If people still can't hear you, open “Call check” and write to us through the button in the app with the device name, the network type and the result; it helps us directly.

🆕 The current version

Version 1.42.1 · Build 97 Updated on · Israel time

What's new since version 1.40.1

The app will ask you to update to version 1.42.1, as with every new version. The new version installs over the existing one, without removing it, and your account is kept. The latest version is always available for download on this site.

📜 What changed from version to version

Every version published here, from newest to oldest. Each release adds the details of its improvements here.

1.40.1 · Build 88 19 October 2026

  • Game invitations — always visible: in a game room, an invitation to you shows as a card at the top of the screen — who invites, which game and how much time is left — with “I'll play” and “Not now”. In the lobby, while watching another table, and when your table has just ended.
  • The board on the whole screen: in a game room the board takes the whole screen, and the chat and people are behind one small button. The voice goes on as usual, and a 10×10 checkers board is readable on a narrow phone too.
  • Clear messages: whoever invited sees “Waiting for … to accept” on the board, with a countdown and a way to cancel; an invitation not accepted in time is said as such; and after an invitation cancelled before it was accepted, you can invite again after 30 seconds.
  • Staff entering and leaving: the announcement of a staff member responsible for the room shows and is heard every time they enter or leave.
  • Entry and exit times in the chat: the lines for entering and leaving the room now also show the time.

1.40.0 · Build 87 19 October 2026

  • New — the “Games” tab: a third tab at the bottom of the main screen brings the games world together: the live game rooms and which tables are open in each, upcoming events with “Remind me”, and a top-players board for each game room covering the last 30 days — display name, wins and games; whoever doesn't want to appear chooses “Don't show me on the leaderboards”. Whoever has been approved also sees “Open a game room” there.
  • Games in a regular room — the room owner decides: “Games in this room” in the room's settings turns games off in the room.
  • New — Host quiz: someone asks questions from what they know, gives points to each participant, and at the end the summary — first, second and third place — is written to the chat.
  • New — Trivia duel: a fast game for two: the same question appears for both of you at the same moment, and whoever answers correctly and faster gets more points. 8 or 12 questions, up to a minute and a half.
  • New — “20 Questions” and “Who am I?”: guessing games out loud for the whole room. In “20 Questions” one person types something in secret and everyone asks yes-or-no questions; in “Who am I?” each player gets a character or a thing that all the other players see, and asks until they guess it. The app now has 20 games.
  • Room chat — from all your visits: in a room you see the messages written while you were there, from all your visits within the room's retention period — with “Show messages from your earlier visits” at the top of the chat. The management team also sees the last hour when entering, for proper moderation.
  • New — “Bring a friend”: a personal invitation code in your profile. For every 3 friends who join with it and stay active — a month of premium, after the pilot period.
  • The privacy notice was updated: a section on the top-players boards and on game data in regular rooms was added; on your first sign-in the app will ask you to approve it again.
  • And more — tailored to you: there are plenty of modular options for adapting rooms and features to the needs of users and communities; tell us what you need — in “I have a request” in the ⋮ menu.

1.39.0 · Build 86 19 October 2026

  • New — entering and leaving: every time someone enters or leaves a room, a line appears in the chat; and when a staff member responsible for the room comes in or leaves, everyone sees a banner at the top and hears a spoken announcement, with a bell when they come in.
  • New — connected to a room, on every screen: Moved to another screen in the middle of a room call? A small bar at the bottom of the screen shows which room you are connected to and who is speaking now, and a tap takes you back to the room. Opening a personal link with a friend who is in that same room? The app first offers “Answer there?” and takes you to the room in one tap.
  • Registering from abroad — with a verified email: Once your email is verified you join right away as a temporary member for two weeks; phone verification may be required later. In the first two weeks you can write privately only to the founder and role holders, and anyone who tries to write to someone else sees a clear message with a “Contact us” button.
  • New — invitation link: a community manager can now also send a one-time invitation link: open it on your phone, sign up, and join the community automatically.
  • Premium for the first 35 (instead of 100): the first 35 people who stick with the app (based on real activity on more than ten days, checked by a smart algorithm) will get a premium badge for a year, counted from the end of the pilot.
  • Gold for lifetime premium members: lifetime premium members are marked in gold: a golden frame around the name, and the name itself in gold — in rooms, in the chat, in the friends list and on the profile.
  • New — all the videos on one page: the short how-to videos are gathered on the Videos page, in all 22 languages.
  • Muting and blocking an account: recorded and managed on the server, with a clear hierarchy.
  • The privacy notice was updated: a section on game data in game rooms was added; on your first sign-in the app will ask you to approve it again.
  • And more — tailored to you: there are plenty of modular options for adapting rooms and features to the needs of users and communities; tell us what you need — in “I have a request” in the ⋮ menu.

1.38.1 · Build 85 18 October 2026

  • New — the app in 22 languages: 16 languages join Hebrew, English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Arabic: Amharic, Czech, German, Persian, French, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese and Traditional Chinese. Choose in “Accessibility and display” → “Layout and language” → “Language”; in Persian, as in Arabic and Hebrew, the whole app reads right to left. In Vietnamese, Persian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Amharic the text is shown in the phone’s own font, which suits their script. The translations are new — found a mistake? Write to us in “Suggestions and bug reports”.
  • New — the site and the guide in 22 languages: this site and the “Step-by-step guide” are available in every language of the app. Choose a language with the 🌐 button at the top of the page, and “About” in the app opens the site in your language.
  • New — the charter in every language: the “Charter of Respect and Against Antisemitism” now exists in all 22 languages. Whoever is asked to approve it reads it in the language of their app, and every translation is faithful to the Hebrew text.
  • Notifications in your language: notifications — calls from friends, invitations, community announcements, event reminders and updates about your account — arrive in the language you chose in the app.
  • Read-aloud in every script: “Select to read” now also recognises Persian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Amharic, and reads every text in the voice of its own language, when such a voice is installed on the device. The settings screens, read-aloud settings included, are translated into every language too.
  • New — “Contact us”: in the ⋮ menu on the home screen — our email and a number to reach us by chat, in one tap.

1.38.0 · Build 84 12 October 2026

  • New — a game room: a room of the “games” kind, with no camera and with voice in the background. The lobby shows the open tables; anyone in the room opens a table — picks a game and invites players — or joins a table as a spectator. Voice goes by table: you hear and talk only with the people playing or watching at the same table, and the lobby is one more table. Spectators talk too, a player can send a spectator away from the table, and when a game ends — “Another round”.
  • New — ten games: Reversi, five in a row (Gomoku), Mancala, Battleship, War (cards), Dominoes, Yaniv, Hangman, Trivia and Eretz Ir (categories) — on top of chess, checkers, backgammon, tic-tac-toe, connect four and dice. In a regular room, as before, whoever manages the game starts it; in a game room — anyone in the room.
  • Chess — a clock, and the board doesn't jump: whoever opens a game chooses no time limit (the default) or a clock by FIDE rules — Blitz 3 min + 2 s, Rapid 15 + 10, Classical 90 + 30; the server keeps the clock, and two clocks sit next to the board. The “On air now” bar keeps one height even when several people talk, so the board does not change in the middle of a game.
  • New — photos in the private chat: between friends, from the gallery or the camera, like in rooms. “Block photos from…” blocks photos only — the person can still write and talk — and a photo can be reported. Every photo sent — in a room or in private — has its location, camera and time data (EXIF) removed before it leaves the phone.
  • New — stickers for everyone: the stickers button in the chat — in rooms and in private — is now open to every user, with three packs: Israeli sayings, feelings, and holidays — plus more modular theme packs that can be tailored to users’ needs.
  • Personal link — you see whether your friend hears you: a line under the talk button says “X is connected and hears you”, “X isn't in the link yet — they were notified” (when their app is closed or in the background), “Connecting” or “Retrying through a relay server”; “Talking — X hears you” appears only when the friend is really connected. The floating button is no longer cut off by a small finger movement, and if the microphone permission is missing — a message with “Fix”.
  • Only a phone call mutes: a regular phone call still mutes the room and closes the microphone. Another app that grabs the audio for a moment — WhatsApp, a voice message, another walkie-talkie — no longer mutes OrenChat, and the sound comes back at once. In rooms and in the personal link.
  • Blocks — for a limited time or permanently: whoever blocks in a room chooses: permanently, or for a limited time — 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour, two hours, 5 hours, a day, a week or until a date and time — and the block lifts by itself when the time is up. Removal from a room is not a block.
  • A permissions screen anyone can understand: wherever permissions are granted — in a room and in the app — every permission has a simple name and a line explaining what it gives, and the “Grant permissions to others” switch shows at once what may be given.
  • A prominent microphone, always: the microphone button is large and prominent in every room and every call — in open talk too — and the call bar stays visible even while a game board is open.
  • A notification for a private message: a new private text message arrives as a notification with the sender's name only — without the content of the message.
  • New — deleting your account, in your hands: in “Security & sign-in” → “Delete my account”, and also from the Delete account page on this site. The account is blocked at once and deleted for good after 30 days; until then, signing in again cancels it. Whoever deleted disappears from friends lists, and their messages in rooms show as “Deleted user”.
  • The privacy notice was updated: the providers by name — Google (Firebase and Google Cloud), Cloudflare and SMS4Free — and what each receives; security and enforcement logs are kept for a year after an account is deleted. The permissions on this site are described anew as well: contacts are read only when you ask to “Find friends from your contacts”.
  • And more — tailored to you: there are plenty of modular options for adapting rooms and features to the needs of users and communities; tell us what you need — in “I have a request” in the ⋮ menu.

1.37.1 · Build 83 8 October 2026

  • The floating button stays put: a press or a small finger movement no longer moves it. To move it: long-press (a tick), then drag — also onto the X to close it.
  • Talk lock in “Pull out mic”: hold and talk; a quick slide up locks the talk so you can let go; one tap releases it, and the lock releases by itself after 2 minutes.
  • “Who to talk to” on the floating button now opens with a double tap (instead of a long press).

1.37.0 · Build 82 7 October 2026

  • New — interests: in your profile you pick at least 3 topics (up to 25); on the friends screen, “People who share your interests”, a choice of who sees your topics, and the option not to be suggested.
  • New — “Find friends from your contacts”: on the Friends tab. The permission is asked only on tap, only a name and photo are shown, never numbers, and the numbers are not stored. In “Security & sign-in”: “Don't find me by phone number”.
  • New — side rooms: inside a room, “Open a side room” for a side conversation. Only people in the room see and join it, inside you hear only the side room, and “Back to the room” returns you. An empty side room closes after two minutes.
  • A “Rooms | Friends” bar with an unread count. In a private chat: voice messages up to 5 minutes (slide up to lock), and a walkie-talkie — hold, drag up to lock, and the floating button carries on.
  • New — “Invite friends” and a room link: an icon at the top of the room (once you have joined) and a row in the participants list, several at once, up to 25 an hour; and “Share a room link” in the ⋮ menu — the link opens straight in the room when the app is installed, and otherwise on a page of this site.

1.36.1 · Build 81 7 October 2026

  • New — quiet hours, each person sets their own: ⋮ menu on the home screen → “Quiet hours” (also from “Friends live — alerts”). Turn them on and choose from what time to what time — the default is 23:00–07:00, and a range past midnight works too — by your phone’s clock. During those hours no notifications reach you, with no exceptions — not even community announcements or event reminders — and nothing is lost: messages and requests wait for you in the app. You can choose “Calls from friends still come through”, and a tag of your name in a room and urgent security alerts about your account always come through.
  • New — “I'm busy”: next to your name on the home screen, or in the ⋮ menu on the home screen right after “Quiet hours”, mark yourself busy — for half an hour, an hour, two hours, until the morning (07:00), until you turn it off or until a time you choose — and the mark goes away by itself. During that time no notifications reach you, exactly as in quiet hours. In a room your microphone closes (you can open it again any time) and everyone in the room sees “Busy” next to your name; outside a room only your friends see it. During a call you can also do it straight from the “Connected to room…” notification, with the “Busy for an hour” button. It replaces the “busy” mark of earlier versions.
  • New — a visible speaking queue: in a room with a stage or with taking turns, everyone now sees the queue — a strip that stays under the stage, with a gold circle holding each person’s number and their name in bold; tap the strip to open the full list. Whoever is waiting sees “You are number N in the queue”, and gets a “You're next!” alert when they reach the front and “Your turn — the microphone is open” when they go up to speak. For the stage manager: “Next in queue”, reordering, removing from the queue and clearing it, and a speaking time per speaker — 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes, or no limit — with a clock everyone can see; when the time is up the next person goes up automatically, or there is just a reminder, as the manager chose.
  • New — “Pull out mic”: a button in every call — in a room, a sub-room and a personal link. The app goes to the background, the call keeps playing, and the floating button becomes press-and-hold: hold it to talk and release it to listen. Under it, “To:” and the name of the conversation. In an open-talk room only your own microphone becomes press-to-talk. “Return mic” or the X ends it. The first time, you allow “Display over other apps”.
  • New — the app in six languages: Hebrew, English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Arabic. Choose in “Accessibility and display” → “Layout and language” → “Language”; in Arabic the whole app reads right to left. The translations are new — found a mistake? Tell us from inside the app, in “Suggestions and bug reports”.
  • New — the site and the guide in six languages: this site and the “Step-by-step guide” are now also available in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic, alongside Hebrew and English, and “About” in the app opens the site in your language.

1.35.1 · Build 79 6 October 2026

  • A chirp right on press: in a push-to-talk room, the talk button chirps right when you press and when you release — from every button: on the screen, on the headset, the floating button and the notification.
  • The floating button: drag it down to the X to close it; under it, “To:” and who you are talking to; and a long press shows the room and your recent personal links.
  • New — “Personal link”: a private walkie-talkie between two friends who approved each other. Approve once, and from then on either of you opens it with one tap and is heard at once, even with the screen off. You can both press and talk at the same time, unlike Zello. If the friend’s app is in the background, they get a “Join” notification and join with one tap.
  • New — sub-rooms: inside a room, a “Sub-rooms” strip shows each sub-room and how many people are in it; tap to move, and “Back to ...” returns. In the room list, a sub-room’s card says “Inside” and the room’s name.
  • New — “About”: at the end of the ⋮ menu — opens this site.

1.35.0 · Build 78 6 October 2026

  • Walkie-talkie — several people talk at once: in a push-to-talk room several people press and talk at the same time, with no waiting for the mic to free up, and the “On air now” indicator shows them all. In the “Walkie-talkie” settings: talk with the headset button, by holding volume-down (when turned on) and with a floating button over other apps (with permission); “Talk” and “Leave room” buttons in the persistent notification; the room plays in the background even with the screen off; and radio chirps.
  • “What did I miss”: inside the room — up to the last 5 minutes you heard, in the phone’s memory only; erased right after listening or when you leave the room.
  • “Who’s on air” and friends: a strip at the top of the home screen, a notification when a friend enters a room, “Call me in” and a daily summary. How much is up to you in “Friends live”, including “don’t tell my friends when I enter”.
  • Community announcements and gatherings: the community manager sends up to 3 announcements a day, two hours apart (more only with the founder’s approval), and gathers the community in a room.
  • Stage, events and topics: raise a hand to the stage, scheduled events with “Remind me” and WhatsApp sharing, and 12 topics to follow (up to 3 topic pushes a day).
  • A personal touch: a welcome voice message from Oren, “I have a request” with tracking in “My requests”, and “Personalize” — text size, colours and contrast, sounds volume and simple mode.
  • A premium badge for the first 100: a place is decided by real activity in the app, and the year of premium counts from the end of the pilot.
  • FOUNDER ROOM and the premium rooms: Oren’s room has a gold “PREMIUM ROOM” badge, and every new room the founder opens is a premium room — up to 100 participants and up to 3 cameras with no permit and no quota.

1.34.4 · Build 77 6 October 2026

  • Room rename request: a room owner taps the pencil icon next to their room, enters a new name and a reason, and the request reaches the founder and their community manager. One of them approves — and the name changes. The owner is told the decision.

1.34.3 · Build 76 6 October 2026

  • Release notes for beta testers: every beta version comes with "What to look at in this version" — new things, fixes and what to test — on the update screen and in "Beta versions", in Hebrew and English. Security updates are listed there in general terms.

1.34.2 · Build 75 6 October 2026

  • Closing a room for good — only on purpose: a room owner closing their room, and anyone entitled to close another room, first sees a warning: "there is no way back", ticks "close anyway", and only then does the button work.

1.34.1 · Build 74 6 October 2026

  • Beta versions — like any update: a beta programme member gets a new beta as a mandatory update, exactly as everyone gets a regular version: the app shows the update screen, you tap to download, install and carry on. No addresses and no files to look for.

1.34.0 · Build 73 6 October 2026

  • Room chat is now kept for a week (instead of 90 days): older messages were deleted with this update. A room owner can ask Oren for an extension (a month, 3 months, half a year or a year) from the room settings.
  • Quick reactions on messages: long-press a message — 👍 ❤️ 😂 😮 😢 🙏 🔥 👏 — one reaction per person, shown under the message.
  • Video — new and clear: 10 minutes of camera a day per user (instead of a minute per six hours), up to 2 cameras in a room (3 when a role holder presents), and video is limited automatically when the load could hurt the voice quality — the phone protects the voice first.
  • Tenure in the profile: "With us X weeks / months" shows in every user's profile and updates once a week.
  • Beta programme: whoever wants versions before everyone asks from the personal menu ("Beta versions"); Oren approves, and the next versions reach them first.
  • A push on every new version: when a version comes out, everyone gets a notification — and the app still asks to update on opening.

1.33.0 · Build 72 5 October 2026

  • Friends — easier: add friends straight from the room's participant list, "My friends" is in the personal menu and inside the room, a friend request arrives as a notification you accept or decline from, and whoever was not available sees the pending requests when opening the app.
  • "Room owner" always shows: the owner's name under the room's name is kept with the room itself, so it appears at once in every room.
  • The privacy notice was updated: the registration text and the site explain exactly which sign-in details are kept (internet address, provider, kind of device and time), that they are accessible to Oren alone, and that every look at them is recorded.
  • The microphone mark left the video square: it no longer hides the person on camera — the microphone state shows next to the participant's name in the participants list.

1.32.7 · Build 71 4 October 2026

  • The founder deletes his own messages at any time: fixed — after the first hour too, the founder (and in a room, whoever is authorized to remove messages) deletes his own message or picture directly, without the "only at your request" notice.
  • "Conversation type" opens again: the white screen that appeared when tapping "Conversation type" inside a room is fixed — the room-controls sheet opens as usual.

1.32.6 · Build 70 4 October 2026

  • Bigger video in the test room: the video gets half the screen by default (you can still drag it), and the explanations shrank to one line by the countdown — tap it to open the full explanation.

1.32.5 · Build 69 4 October 2026

  • Choose a community already at registration: from a list, or “I haven’t decided yet”, or a request to set up a community of your own. The choice takes effect when Oren approves.
  • A request to set up a community: after the registration is approved, a conversation with Oren opens with a form — background, why, the ability to run a community over time, and a commitment to the values of ethics and integrity.
  • Community managers: are alerted about every new applicant who chose their community, and those Oren has authorized can block a device of a member of their own community.

1.32.4 · Build 68 4 October 2026

  • Registration details visible only to those who need them: Oren and your community’s manager see your registration details on a clear screen — full name, email, age, phone and when you registered — so they can look after you. Managers of other communities and friends do not see them, and every view is recorded.

1.32.3 · Build 67 4 October 2026

  • Voice messages in the chat: up to a minute per message. While you record and listen, the room’s sound is muted for you and your microphone is closed, and an icon appears next to your name.
  • Tagging with @, chat search and slow mode: whoever is tagged is notified even outside the room; search a word or a name within what you may see; the room’s managers can set the pace of messages.
  • Automatic word filter: a message with a forbidden word is blocked and not sent.
  • “Busy” and muting the room’s sound: mark yourself busy for the time you choose, or mute the room’s sound for yourself — and everyone sees you are not available.
  • A phone call in the middle of a room: the microphone closes, the room’s sound is muted, and a phone icon appears next to your name.
  • “Sound check” in the test room: talk for 20 seconds and hear yourself; and every message in the test room is deleted after 3 minutes.

1.32.2 · Build 66 3 October 2026

  • A new ״חדר בדיקות״ (“Test room”): a room for checking your camera and microphone — two people at the same time, each for up to 3 minutes with a countdown, and then you can come back half an hour later. When the room is busy, it shows how many minutes to wait.
  • ״אורן וחברים״, the founder’s room: open to everyone, up to 100 participants. Anyone turns a camera on without a permit, up to three at the same time, and the pilot’s video minute does not apply in it. Only Oren and the moderators he appointed for this room manage its participants.

1.32.1 · Build 65 3 October 2026

  • Every manager sees only what they are allowed: on the permission screens — for users, in a room, for room owners and for game managers — a manager sees only permissions they hold themselves and that Oren allowed them to pass on. A permission they do not have is not shown to them at all. A room owner in their own room sees all of the room's permissions, as before.
  • Permissions only Oren grants: reading private messages, security alerts, immunity and handling reports — only Oren grants and revokes them, and they cannot be passed on. So they are also not shown on the screen where Oren decides what others may pass on.

1.32.0 · Build 64 3 October 2026

  • Room entry by community: Oren can decide which rooms each community's members may enter. A community's own rooms are always open to its members. On top of that, he decides two things separately: whether they may enter general rooms, and whether they may enter other communities' rooms. A personal setting can also be set for a specific member, and it overrides the community's setting. A member of several communities gets the most permissive setting among them. Until Oren sets something, nothing changes.
  • A locked room in the list: a room you may not enter appears with a padlock and no count of people. Tapping it explains why, and does not take you in. Private and secret rooms of other communities stay hidden, as before. The restriction does not apply to Oren, to a room's owner in their own room, or to role holders within the scope they were given.
  • The font is built into the app: text shows in the app's own font from the very first launch, even without internet. The app no longer contacts Google's font server, so that server does not receive your IP address — a privacy improvement.

1.31.1 · Build 63 3 October 2026

  • Everyone chooses what to see in the room: a thin row at the top of the room has toggles for video, people, chat and game, and the same toggles are also in the ⋮ menu. What you close is closed for you only, and the sound goes on even with the video closed. Your choice is remembered for each room on your phone.
  • Game layout: when a game starts, the video, the participants list and the chat close by themselves, and the board gets the screen. Everyone reopens whatever they want for themselves. The chat opens as a layer over the lower part of the board. Anyone who does not want to watch hides the game and gets the normal layout back, and the game goes on for the others.
  • Leaving the game: a “Leave the game” button is always in the game panel. A player in the middle of a game is asked to confirm, because leaving mid-game is a forfeit and the opponent wins. While the game is still at the invitation stage, leaving declines the invitation. A spectator just closes the view. You leave the game only, not the room.
  • The board fits the screen: chess, checkers, backgammon, tic-tac-toe and four in a row fit the size of the screen, with no scrolling, on phones and tablets, also with a large font.
  • Drag to choose the space: the video can shrink to a thin strip, and the participants list can be made wider.
  • A tidy participants list: first whoever raised a hand, in the order the hands went up. After them whoever is speaking, the role holders and everyone else. The display name shows in full, on up to two lines, and the role as a coloured badge. When a room has more than 10 participants, a search field appears.
  • Locking the microphone in push-to-talk: press the microphone and slide up a little. The microphone stays open after you lift your finger, and the button shows a lock and the word “Locked”. Another tap releases it. A plain press works as before.
  • Soft mute also for the founder and super admins: if someone forgot an open microphone, any manager in the room who may mute can soft-mute them, even the founder or a super admin. The muted person turns the microphone back on with a single tap. A full mute, removal or ban of them is still not in the room managers' hands.
  • A title attached to the name: Oren can give any account a small title attached to the name, much like his own “Founder” tag. He picks one from a list (General admin, Community manager, Development team, Dispute resolution) or writes his own, in a colour chosen for each person and in a rounded font. The title shows in the participants bar, the chat, the profile and the friends list. It is for display only and grants no permission.
  • Fix: saving a password works again. In version 1.31.0 a server fault prevented changing a password or adding a password to a Google account. The fault has been fixed.
  • Fix: a false "call server is off" message. Anyone who signed in after opening the app (for example after signing out and in again) could see the server as off and be unable to join a call until reopening the app. This is fixed.
  • A clearer password change screen: every failure is shown on the screen, next to the save button, with an explanation of what to do. A password that was saved is no longer reported as a failure by mistake. If you do not remember your current password, tap “I forgot my current password” and a reset e-mail is sent to the account's address. Typing Hebrew letters in a strict password shows a hint to switch the keyboard to English. A space at the start or end of the password is pointed out clearly. After the change, other devices signed in to the account are signed out, and the device you changed it on stays signed in.

1.31.0 · Build 62 2 October 2026

  • How many people are in each room — before you enter — every room card on the home screen shows how many people are in it right now, in real time.
  • Editing a message in a room — a message you wrote in a room can be edited within the first hour (long-press → “Edit”). An edited message is marked “edited”, and the previous wording is kept on the server for 90 days for safety.
  • Messages that delete themselves — before sending, in a room or in private, you choose whether the message is deleted after half an hour, two hours, a day, two days or a week. Deleted messages are kept on the server for 90 days for safety, and are then deleted.
  • Reports also reach the community manager — a regular report reaches Oren and the community manager, who can handle it; if you prefer, tick “Anonymous report — to Oren only”.
  • Stronger passwords — at least 10 characters, with a letter and a digit, for everyone; a strict password for role holders and permission holders. Anyone with a weak password gets a reminder for 30 days, and is then asked to change it at sign-in.
  • Writing to the team in private — you can write freely, even without a friendship, to Oren and to role holders for whom Oren has opened an inbox; Oren can write to anyone.
  • See who is who — role badges now stand out in the participants bar, the chat and the profile: founder in gold, super admin in purple with a shield, room owner in turquoise with a star, deputy in orange with a half-star, and moderator with a shield.
  • A new role: deputy — the room owner appoints up to two deputies, also for a limited time. While the owner is away they run the room day to day, including “Lock for new arrivals”; the moment the owner returns, their powers shrink by themselves to moderator powers, and moderators a deputy appointed expire with them.
  • Closer oversight for safety — Oren can appoint a trusted reviewer for a limited time, and every oversight action is logged.
  • New: the site in English and a step-by-step guide — this whole page is also available in English, plus a guide of 26 short slides in Hebrew and English, from download to managing a room. The screenshots on the site are new — in the dark scheme; everyone picks the colour scheme that suits them in “Accessibility and display”.

1.30.2 · Build 61 1 October 2026

  • Simpler, clearer wording of the terms of service. At your next sign-in to the app you are asked to accept them.

1.30.1 · Build 60 1 October 2026

  • An update to the terms of service. At your next sign-in to the app you are asked to read and accept them again.

1.30.0 · Build 59 1 October 2026

  • Chess, checkers and backgammon inside the room — chess with all the rules, checkers in three styles chosen by the game manager (flying kings, English, international on a 10×10 board) and backgammon with dice rolled by the server. The board offers only legal moves, and the server checks every move — nobody can cheat.
  • Age-based rooms — the room owner can set the room for ages 20+ up to 60+, in steps of five years. Anyone below the room's age gets a message, without anyone's age being revealed.
  • Adult-content rooms — the room owner can mark a room as adult content. Such rooms are hidden, and anyone who wants to see them turns this on themselves and confirms. The whole app is for ages 18 and up.
  • Security — the app's code is obfuscated so it is hard to decipher, and repeated attempts to perform management actions without permission are detected and reported.

1.29.0 · Build 58 30 September 2026

  • Room chat — from the moment you entered — whoever enters a room sees what has been written since they arrived, not before and not while they were not in the room. What you have already seen is kept on your phone. Fewer misunderstandings and less gossip.
  • One account, one device — when someone signs in on another phone, the previous phone is disconnected from it immediately and gets a clear explanation. This way one account cannot be used from several phones.
  • Screenshots in reports — you can attach up to three screenshots to a report, and they reach Oren only.
  • Protection from harassers — when there is a suspicion that someone is being abused, Oren gets a full picture of the case and reviews it himself. An artificial-intelligence service helps with the analysis, without names.
  • Security — detection of suspicious technical signs (frequent switching between devices, several accounts from the same network), and new tools for the team to handle inactive rooms and rooms without owners.

1.28.0 · Build 57 30 September 2026

  • Clearer voice in every room — voice gets priority over video, is more resilient to packet loss on a weak network, and is not cut off during silence. The relay server refreshes for every new connection, so even in a long session nobody disappears in the middle.
  • Where the sound goes — you choose — a "Sound" button in the call bar: speaker, earpiece, Bluetooth headphones or wired headphones. Every call starts on the speaker at full volume, and if headphones are already connected — through them.
  • A new, calm and clean design — a dark or light theme of your choice, text size in five steps and a separate size for the chat, a call bar with names under the icons, and thin gold bars you drag to resize the participants column and the chat.
  • Foldable phones — on an open screen the video and chat are shown side by side and the home screen in two columns; on a closed screen the header fits without being cut off.
  • Communities and community managers — Oren can assign users to a community and appoint a manager for it, who looks after the members and their rooms with the powers Oren has set.
  • Temporary membership — with clear limits — in the first two weeks you take part in rooms by voice and nickname only, until the introductory call and approval.
  • Notifications that arrive — account notifications (approval, reminders, sign-in from a new device) now reach your phone even when the app is closed, and stop arriving after you sign out.
  • Security hardening — a full security review before publishing, and all the findings were fixed and tested. Role holders are asked to sign in again after 30 days without a sign-in.

1.27.0 · Build 56 29 September 2026

  • Games inside the room — tic-tac-toe and four in a row for two (everyone else watches, talks and gives advice during the call), and dice for the whole room. The server checks every move, so nobody can cheat.
  • Game manager — a room owner who has been given the permission appoints a user to run a certain type of game. The permission is given separately and grants no other authority in the room.
  • A clear message about the video limit — when the pilot period's minute of video runs out, a message appears with the time when you can turn on a camera again.
  • Clear icons in the call bar — "Call check" and the camera flip are now colored dark and are clearly visible.

1.26.0 · Build 55 29 September 2026

  • OrenChat moved into a home of its own — the app's server and database moved to a separate cloud project dedicated to it alone. Users, rooms and messages moved with it; after the update you continue from the same place.
  • A call relay server — when phones on different mobile networks have no direct connection, the call goes through a relay server, and voice and video still get through. "Call check" shows "Call relay: available".
  • A new icon — "Oren" inside a golden ellipse, and "Chat" in blue. You will see it on your home screen after the update.

1.25.7 · Build 54 29 September 2026

  • Who's hosting — at the top of every room you see the room's name and the room owner's name.
  • A microphone you can't miss — in a "push-to-talk" room the microphone button is large and orange, and turns green while you talk.
  • Getting ready for a relay server — the app can pass a call through a relay server; "Call check" shows whether it is available.

1.25.6 · Build 53 29 September 2026

  • Identity verification for those registering from abroad — anyone without an Israeli mobile number can ask to verify their identity another way, for example in a WhatsApp call, and continue right after verification.
  • More orderly management — a clear definition of what each role holder may do themselves, and what they may grant to others.

1.25.5 · Build 52 29 September 2026

  • The camera works in both directions — fixed an issue where, between some participants, only one side saw the other's camera.
  • Call check — a new button in the call bar that shows, for each participant, whether voice and video are going out and arriving. When something can't be heard you see right away in which direction the problem is, and you can copy the result and send it to us.
  • A link to the site on the home screen — after installation the app offers to add a link to the OrenChat site to your home screen, and you can also add it from the account menu.
  • Phone verification — anyone asked to verify their phone number sees a clear screen with an SMS code, and can continue right after verification.

1.25.4 · Build 51 29 September 2026

  • Faster approval of new registrations — anyone waiting for approval is clearly marked in the user list, and can be approved as a regular user, or the request declined, directly from the user card, without giving them any special permission.

1.25.3 · Build 50 29 September 2026

  • Approving registrations works again — fixed an issue where new requests to join did not appear for review, and the applicants stayed waiting.
  • One-tap update — when an update is required, the button downloads the new version directly, without going through the page.

1.25.2 · Build 49 29 September 2026

  • An update check that doesn't stop you — if it isn't possible to check whether a new version is out (for example without internet), the app keeps working and shows a small message with a link to the site. A mandatory update kicks in only when a new version really is available.
  • Privacy of applicants — the personal details of whoever registers are revealed only to those explicitly given permission.
  • Improvements to the management tools — appointing role holders is faster and more orderly.

1.25.1 · Build 48 29 September 2026

  • Stronger protection of your details — a thorough security review following the OWASP standards went over the app, the server and the build process. This version includes the fixes on the app side.
  • A mandatory update that covers every screen — when a new version comes out, even someone in the middle of a room or a private chat is asked to update, not only those on the home screen.
  • The download link always comes from the official site — the update screen opens only the OrenChat home site, and no other address.
  • Privacy on the lock screen — notifications don't show names and details while the phone is locked.
  • Safe phone transfer — when you transfer data to a new phone, your OrenChat sign-in details don't move with it; on the new phone you sign in again.

1.25.0 · Build 47 28 September 2026

  • You're heard even when the screen is off — during a call the app keeps the microphone active, even when the phone is lying on the table and the screen locks, or when you briefly switch to another app. During a call a permanent “Active call” notification is shown; this is an Android requirement and cannot be avoided.
  • Cleaner sound on the speaker — echo cancellation moved to processing suited to speaker mode, instead of the hardware processing that on some devices cut the voice or sent echo back to the other side.
  • A “Transmitting” indicator — next to your name in the room a green “Transmitting” indicator appears when the microphone is really picking you up. This way you can see for yourself whether you are being heard.
  • Other people's cameras open reliably — fixed an issue where another participant's camera was sometimes shown as a black tile, depending on timing.
  • A more stable connection after a short drop-out — a participant who was disconnected for a moment comes back to the list and the call by themselves; quickly re-entering a room doesn't get mixed up with the previous call.
  • A clear message when the room's call mode changes — switching between open talk, push-to-talk and the queue is shown to everyone in the room as a prominent message, with an announcement for screen readers and a short vibration, so that nobody is left wondering why their microphone went silent.
  • Mandatory automatic updates — from this version the app checks on every launch, every return from the background and once an hour whether a new version is out here on the site. When there is a new version, the app stops working until it is installed, so that everyone in the room is on the same version.

1.24.0 · Build 46 15 September 2026

  • Personal read-aloud on the user's choice: texts and button labels are read aloud on the device, with stop, adjustable speed and a clear selection mode.
  • Three call modes in one place: open talk, push-to-talk and a visible queue with raising hands, a stage and an audience.
  • 16 room backgrounds, with a reminder to consider accessibility needs, keeping the personal contrast preference.
  • More protection of participants' identity: stronger checks of the sender's details, and their identity is kept when a message is edited.

1.23.0 · Build 45 15 September 2026

  • Surveys that shape further development: choice, rating and free text, with an invitation in real time and also at the next sign-in, and a clear end date.
  • The improvement suggestions button is available inside the room too, with tracking of the handling and the replies in the same request.
  • Video in rooms by permit: a request with a number of cameras and a duration, a message when the quota is full, and clearer connection messages.

Versions 1.21 and 1.22 were internal development versions and were not published; their changes were included in 1.23.0.

1.20.3 · Build 42 14 September 2026

  • Neater and clearer screens, adaptation to narrow screens and enlarged text, labels for buttons and keyboard testing.

1.20.2 · Build 41 14 September 2026

  • A user list that is readable on the phone, even in a view with enlarged text.

1.20.1 · Build 40 14 September 2026

  • A participant list next to the chat, taking turns and raising hands, improvements to the room layout and to joining.

1.18.2 · Build 37 13 September 2026

  • Fixed the order of messages in the room and in private chat: the newest message next to the input box, and you scroll up for the history.

1.18.1 · Build 36 12 September 2026

  • Fixed an issue in the voice connection between participants; the call opens on the speaker; participants who were disconnected without leaving disappear from the list within about a minute.

🧪 The beta programme — want new versions before everyone else?
Any active member can ask to join: in the ⋮ menu on the home screen choose “Beta versions” and tap “Ask to join the beta”. Before the request is sent, the app explains what it means: beta versions may contain bugs, you get updates among the first, and you are asked to write reviews and suggestions for improvements and fixes, preferably with screenshots. Tap “Count me in”, and the request goes to Oren, who approves it. You can send one request a day. Once approved, every beta version reaches you before everyone else as a mandatory update, like any update — update screen, download, install — and so you help find problems before the version reaches all users. In the “Beta versions” screen you send Oren a “Beta review”: what worked, what did not and what should be improved, with up to 3 screenshots. When does a version go out to all users? That is Oren's decision.
Before you start — two minutes of background, no jargon.
The app is not in the Google Play store yet; it is installed directly from the download file on this page. You may be asked to allow installation from this source. A warning about a harmful app is a different matter: if such a warning appears, stop the installation and contact Oren to look into it.

This page tells you exactly what to tap, step by step. Want to be walked through screen by screen, from the download to running a room? Step-by-step guide — 37 short slides, in Hebrew and English; and every other language of the site has a guide in its own language.

📱 Installing on Android

Samsung — read this first

Samsung phones have a blocker that prevents the installation altogether. It is called Auto Blocker, and on newer models it is turned on at the factory. As long as it is on, the installation simply won't start — you won't even get an option to approve it. You need to turn it off before installing, and you can turn it back on right afterwards.
  1. Open Settings on the phone.
  2. Scroll down and choose Security and privacy.
  3. Tap Auto Blocker.
If you don't have this line, your model doesn't include it — you can skip to step 6.
  4. Turn off the Auto Blocker switch.
  5. Go back. That's the preparation done.
  6. Open the download link on this page, and tap Download. If you are asked whether to download a file of this type — confirm.
  7. Open the My Files app → Downloads, and tap the file OrenChat…apk.
  8. A message appears saying apps can't be installed from this source. Tap Settings in the message, turn on Allow from this source, and go back.
  9. Tap Install.
  10. If a Play Protect message appears — "App blocked" or "Harmful file detected" — stop the installation and contact Oren. Leave Play Protect on.
  11. Open the app. We recommend going back to Settings and turning Auto Blocker back on — it will no longer get in the way of the app you have installed.

Xiaomi, POCO and Redmi

  1. Download the file and tap it in Downloads.
  2. Allow installation from unknown sources for the browser or file manager you opened it from.
  3. A security window appears with a countdown of a few seconds. Wait, tick I am aware of the risks, and tap OK.
  4. If a security scan is offered, read the explanation of what information is sent and choose whether to agree. If the scan detects a threat, stop and contact Oren.

Pixel, OnePlus, OPPO, realme and other models

  1. Download the file and tap it in the list of downloads.
  2. In the warning that appears, tap Settings and turn on Allow from this source → go back → Install.
  3. If Play Protect blocks or warns about a harmful app — stop and contact Oren.

The permissions the app will ask for, and why

PermissionWhy it's needed
MicrophoneWithout it you can't talk in a room. This is the only permission that is truly required.
NotificationsFor the call’s permanent notification (“Connected to room…”), which is what keeps you heard even when the screen is off, and for messages from the app. Allowing it is recommended.
CameraOnly if you want video and the room has a valid permit and space in its quota, or to take a photo for the chat — in a room or in private. You can decline and use voice only.
Display over other appsOnly for the floating talk button: when you turn it on in the “Walkie-talkie” settings, or the first time you tap “Pull out mic”. The button only opens and closes your microphone in the call, and does not read or see anything on the screen. You can withdraw the permission at any time in the phone's settings.
ContactsOnly if you tap “Find friends from your contacts” — the permission is asked at that moment only. Only phone numbers are read, they are sent encrypted for a momentary comparison on the server and are not stored, and no number is shown to anyone. You can decline and add friends from the rooms as usual.
The app does not ask for access to your messages or photos. It asks for location only on an account that was marked for a location check — always after a screen that explains what is read and why, and only while the app is open, never in the background. It reads your contacts only if you yourself asked to “Find friends from your contacts”. Sharing a photo goes through the system's photo picker, without access to your whole gallery, and the location data is stripped from the photo before it is sent.

💻 Using the app on a computer

A desktop version is not available for use yet. We are developing an application to install on a computer, first for Linux (Fedora), step by step and with an emphasis on information security, accessibility and call quality. There will be no browser version: an installed application lets us protect the code better.

When there is a version that has been tested and is ready for release, we will update the ways to use it and the matching installation instructions here. In the meantime you can download the updated Android version.

🔑 Your first time in the app

  1. Choose your language out of 23 — each one is shown under its own name — and a display size that is comfortable for you.
  2. Tap Sign in with a Google account and choose your account, or register with an email address and a password (at least 10 characters, with a letter and a digit).
  3. Open the email that is sent to you and tap the verification link. If it doesn't show up, check your spam folder.
  4. Fill in your full name, date of birth and area of residence, read the terms of service shown on the screen, and tick both declarations.
Your full name is not shown to participants and is accessible only for authorized handling of the account. In calls the nickname you choose is shown. Registration is from age 18 and up.
  5. Choose from the list the community you would like to belong to, or “I haven’t decided yet”, or “I’d like to set up a community of my own later” with the community’s name.
Your choice is a request: it takes effect when Oren approves the registration, and only Oren sets up communities and appoints their managers. Whoever asked to set up a community gets, after approval, a conversation with Oren with a short form.
  6. If asked — enter your phone number, receive a code by SMS and type it in.
  7. Verified your phone with an SMS code? You get in right away as a temporary member for two weeks. Signed up with Google without a phone? On the "Waiting for approval" screen there is a button to verify with an SMS code — and then you get in right away. Within the two weeks, arrange a short introductory call with one of the role holders, who will approve permanent membership.
  8. After your first sign-in the app offers fingerprint sign-in for next time. You can accept or skip.
  9. A few seconds after you sign in, the app offers to add a link to the OrenChat site to your home screen, so that the latest version, the explanations and help are always at hand. The phone asks whether to add it — tap Add. Skipped it? You can add it at any time from the account menu (⋮).

🛠️ Something isn't working

On a Samsung phone the installation doesn't start at all, and there is no message That's Auto Blocker. Settings → Security and privacy → Auto Blocker → turn it off, and then install. You can turn it back on right afterwards.
It says "App blocked" or "Harmful file" Stop the installation and contact Oren with the wording of the message and the device details. Don't turn off Play Protect to get around the detection of a harmful app. Google's explanation of app protection.
It says "App not installed" or "Invalid package" Usually the download was cut off. Delete the file from Downloads and download it again. If you have a previous version installed, install over it and don't uninstall it first; that way your account is kept.
I can't hear anyone, or nobody can hear me

Make sure you have allowed the microphone permission: Settings → Apps → OrenChat → Permissions. If you are muted, a sign appears next to your name in the room.

You are heard even when the screen is off. During a call a permanent notification (“Connected to room…”) is shown, and a “Live” indicator appears next to your name when you are being picked up. If the notification doesn't appear during a call, check that the notifications permission is allowed. If the phone drops the room while the screen is off, exempt OrenChat from battery optimisation: in the “Walkie-talkie” settings → “Keep the room running for hours”.

Tap “Check” in the call bar to see, for each participant, whether your voice goes out to them and whether theirs reaches you. On a weak mobile network try switching to Wi-Fi, or the other way round. If the problem comes back, write to us through the button in the app with the device name, the network type and the check's result; it helps us find the cause.

Someone's camera doesn't appear, or my camera closes by itself

Check that the room has a valid video permit and that there is free space in the quota; when the quota is full a message is shown. The camera closes automatically when the approved time is up, and also when the app goes into the background. In the free version it also closes when the day’s 10 minutes are used up (renewed at midnight, Israel time), and it is paused for a moment — with a notice on the tile — when your voice is breaking up or the load is high; it comes back on its own.

If another participant's camera doesn't appear although it is on for them, tap “Check” in the call bar to see whether their video reaches you, and if needed leave the room and enter again. A short report through the button in the app will help.

I'm stuck on "Waiting for approval" That's normal — your registration is waiting for approval. Registered from Israel? Verify your phone with an SMS code from this screen and you get in right away for two weeks of temporary membership. Otherwise, write to Oren.
How do I report a problem from inside the app There is a "Suggestions and bug reports" button inside the app, on the main screen and inside the room as well. What you write there reaches Oren directly, together with the version details, and you can see the reply in the same request.
